Through the 'Day in the Life' series, the journeys of three STEMCELL employees are highlighted. They leverage their backgrounds in biochemistry and cancer genetics to excel in scientific sales roles. Attracting More Teachers to Northwestern BC
How can we boost the number of certified teachers in underserved areas like Northwestern B.C.?
SFU’s Professional Development Program (PDP) has successfully graduated over 20,000 teachers in B.C., establishing itself as one of the province's oldest and most effective teacher training programs.
Collaborating with Northern Lights College, SFU introduced a program variant (AHCOTE) that enables teacher candidates in Northwestern B.C. to undergo training in their local communities, eliminating the need for relocation (a major barrier to entry).
In 2021, a new campaign centered on a ‘regional approach’ utilized media, storytelling, social media engagement, community partnerships, and virtual events to advertise the program, resulting in an increase of 16 students enrolled in the program.
Teacher Education at SFU
What sets SFU’s Teacher Education apart? How do we generate interest and involvement in the program, from applicants and community partners?
SFU’s Professional Development Program (PDP) is one of B.C.’s oldest and most effective teaching programs. Its distinctive framework allows aspiring teachers to explore specific educational aspects or themes that capture their attention. An example is the International Teacher Education Module (ITEM), where participants can immerse themselves in diversity, global education, English as an additional language, and intercultural communication by teaching abroad in India or Mexico.
SFU highlighted the exceptional opportunities within the PDP by celebrating the tenth anniversary of the ITEM India module. Through a collaborative event with the Sambhota Tibetan Schools’ Society and the Tsengdok Monastery Association, program faculty, alumni, and current/future candidates came together to honor and share valuable insights into the program’s uniqueness and achievements.
